Glacier Encounter
Our bestselling summer glacier tour. A family friendly glacier hike on Icelands’s most famous glacier.
Join us on Sólheimajökull glacier in South Iceland, which is full of contrasts and fascinating features. On this 5 h adventure we will explore the areas which have been affected by a subglacial volcano Katla and hike up towards the centre of the glacier from where we have breathtaking views over the glacier lagoon filled with icebergs. Along the way we can admire crevasses and cylindrical, vertical shafts called moulins. If you are lucky or brave enough- your guide might even let you peek into some of these bottomless features. Depending on the season we might have a chance to discover some icy tunnels or even walk inside some of the bright blue crevasses.
No matter where you’re going in Iceland, it’s important to choose the right clothing and dress according to weather. We strongly recommend dressing in layers so it is easy to take off or put on layers depending on weather.
Ice Hunters reserves the rights to refuse participation of clients if not dressed according to weather since this will put the clients at risk. In such circumstances no refunds shall be given.
Layers, layers, layers! In winter it is best to have a wool base layer, mid layer (wool sweater,
fleece or a down jacket) and outer shell layer, preferably wind and water proof. If possible, avoid cotton because it absorbs moisture and dries very slowly. Especially for the longer hikes, jeans are not a good choice. You will get cold in them very easily, and if they get wet on the glacier,
they will stay wet the whole time.
When it comes to footwear, you will need boots with ankle support for hiking on the glacier.
Yes, we do! Our tours take place rain or shine! We only cancel our glacier tours if the glaciers are inaccessible or weather conditions are
dangerous. Rain doesn’t make conditions on the glacier any more dangerous, so plan to come prepared with a waterproof jacket.
It is a good idea to have a small backpack. Sometimes, the weather in Iceland can be
unpredictable and can change every 10 minutes, so you might be putting layers on or taking
them off during the hike. It is good to have gloves and hat in your backpack even on a sunny
summer day.
